Re: Rare variations of the APOE ε4 gene allele (R251G) can DRASTICALLY reduce the risk of AD
Hi everyone. Whole genome sequencing has come down so much in price that it might be worth having it done. Then you can look up all these variants as research reveals them. I look up the variants by sucking the gargantuan genome file into a text reader that can handle huge files (the program is call...

Re: Thoughts on Paxlovid?
Hi Kristin-Marie- From everything I've read, paxlovid is safe. Also from everything I've read, SARS-CoV-2 is not safe, esp. not for the brain. Even mild cases of COVID-19 are associated with damage, possibly permanent, to many organs, including the brain. No study has been done, that I'm aware of, l...

Re: The $100 Genome has Arrived? AD Breakthrough!
Brian4, wow a year? That is closer than I would have thought. That's my educated guess. Could be wrong, but demand for long read sequencing grew substantially because of the pandemic. And then of course there are all the new ideas for cancer therapies, which would require long read sequencing. But ...

Re: Julie's letter to Dr. Hellmuth (& all who've lost scientific curiosity & support status quo in AD research)
So sorry about the COVID, my friend — extra scary with the E4s. Please take care of yourself. I have so many friends who felt better, then ultimately overextended themselves for a bigger relapse. Take it slowly. I also think you're onto something with the notion of "illness" causing a red...

Re: Julie's letter to Dr. Hellmuth (& all who've lost scientific curiosity & support status quo in AD research)
Friends, As it happens I had my annual NeuroQuant scan done a couple weeks ago, and met with the radiologist yesterday. I asked about gray matter changes, and he pointed out that gray matter volume can sometimes increase dramatically if one is sick. Looking at particular regions is key to interpreti...

Re: The $100 Genome has Arrived? AD Breakthrough!
Brian4, thank you for your comment! Yes, I have been following Oxford Nanopore very carefully, though I had not been aware that we had reached the $1,000 full genome price point with them. That is moving into consumer level pricing Hi J11– Just a quick clarification. That is the price they quoted m...

Re: The $100 Genome has Arrived? AD Breakthrough!
The $100 genome is at hand, but I think we should wait until long read technologies come down to that same price. There are too many regions that cannot be read accurately with standard sequencing techniques. Oxford Nanopore is now down to $1000 or so for long read sequencing. We're getting there!
