Re: Another newbie with a host of questions

Hi. My name is Paul, and I recently learned (23&me) that I have one ApoE4 gene. Not a surprise, since I have considerable family history of Alzheimers on my mother's side. Also, I'm 73, and have had enough instances of minor memory struggles (not recalling the name of a city I've visited, or a ...

Re: 21 Proven Ways to Increase Brain Blood Flow

I also learned that more than 100 mg of caffeine a day will restrict blood flow. A Venti from Starbucks has 300 mg of caffeine. I don't drink caffeinated coffee or tea, so that won't make a difference to me, but just in case anyone is wondering about coffee. I've been thinking about caffeine lately...

Re: 21 Proven Ways to Increase Brain Blood Flow

Following up on this older thread: I just purchased gingko today after having listened to Dr. Daniel Amen about what enhances and restricts blood flow to the brain. My favorite quote from this really interesting interview : The prettiest brains I've ever seen take gingko I want a pretty brain :D so ...

Vision loss and high LDL cholesterol modifiable risk factors for dementia

Untreated vision loss and high LDL have been added as risk factors for dementia in a report issued by the Lancet. https://www.statnews.com/2024/07/31/dementia-risk-factors-prevention-treat-high-cholesterol-cataracts-lancet-study/ https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(24)012...

Re: Feel like my time is running out

Taking care of your health through nutrition, exercise, sleep, and socializing are the top preventative factors. I am glad that you will find ways to prioritize them moving forward. The more you exercise, the healthier you'll want to eat. It's a beneficial cycle. I wish you good luck!

Re: Thyroid medication?

You're welcome. It's confusing because there are two studies with slightly different messages: In 2022, Brown University (the Taiwan study) found that people over 65 with hypothyroidism were 80% more likely to develop dementia than those without thyroid issues. Furthermore, those who required thyroi...

Re: Thyroid medication?

Thank you. I like TLS's recommendation to check my iodine levels. Plumster, Bredesen's recommendation to take thyroid medicine (I've read The End of Alzheimer's) predates his more recent posting on X about the new research regarding that medicine being linked to dementia. If one is subclinical and ...

Re: Thyroid medication?

Thanks, Kitkat. For anyone interested, here is another link that Bredesen provided on X, to an article about the study: https://scitechdaily.com/thyroid-problems-linked-to-increased-risk-of-developing-dementia/ Bredesen on X: ReCODE Protocol participants know that hormones impact cognitive health. N...

Re: Thyroid medication?

But I believe that some studies link thyroid medication to increased risk of dementia. Do we know, for apoe4 folks, if the medication is helpful or harmful? On X (on May 20, 2023), Dr. Dale Bredesen wrote, “Those with a history of hypothyroidism were associated with an 81% increased risk of having ...
