Any experience with Bredesen Protocol?
Any experience with Bredesen Protocol?
We have read Dr Bredesen's book and are working with the a doctor that supports the protocol. Curious if others are as well and what their experience has been.
Re: Any experience with Bredesen Protocol?
My husband and I have been following Dr Bredesen and his protocol recommendations since shortly after his Reversal of Cognitive decline paper was published in 2014. Neither of us were noticing cognitive issues at the time, but with family history and three 4 alleles between the two of us, we were motivated.
We’ve basically self-administered the protocol and we test through our doctor or Labcorp/Walk-in Lab. We haven’t conducted all the tests Dr Bredesen recommends, nor do we take every single one of the supplements, but we have been following his protocol for years now. We’ve also followed the The Primer in concentrating first on insulin resistance (especially critical for ApoE4s) and worked on the other strategies from there, we’re still working on some things (right now with significant health issues going on with people close to us, keeping stress down is a tough one). We’ve additionally followed recommendations of discussions from this website/others and added to Dr Bredesen’s Protocol with such things as: Dr Steven Gundry's dietary recommendation for Apoe4s, Dr Terry Wahls daily vegetable protocol to enhance mitochondrial function, Hemp extract/CBD supplementation, breathing exercises, fasting (beyond Dr B's recommended 16 hours), sauna use and others. We’ve gotten very encouraging, positive results with our biomarkers regarding insulin resistance, inflammation, hormones, etc. Our Coronary Arterial Calcium (CAC) scans showed only a little progression – so we’re still in good stead there. We recently took the Cambridge Brain Sciences cognition test and are largely in the “average” category.
We are in our late 50’s early 60s so yes, the Bredesen Protocol is working for us!

Re: Any experience with Bredesen Protocol?
So, I was fortunate enough to get an individual protocol from Dr. Bredesen before his book came out and have been wrangling it for about 3 years. I'm currently working with a regular GP in my hometown, who was interested enough to help, especially in ordering labs. As Theresa mentions, you don't have to do everything or take all the supplements. His personalized protocol for me was really about focusing on out-of-range labs and symptoms.Junipero wrote:Curious if others are as well and what their experience has been.
To date, I have much less trouble with my joints (originally diagnosed as rheumatoid arthritis - taking no prescription drugs), my gut is much healthier, I have less trouble with histamine (foods and seasonal allergies). I used to get an average of 5-6 colds per winter, and now maybe have 1-2, which is a big win for me.
Am I symptom free? No. There are still things I'm working on, including balancing hormones. I'm 63, post-menopausal by many years, and I do feel that age is part of the battle here. I sometimes can't recall names or words as fast as I would like, but usually can trace it to sleep issues. And I'm still working on some very stubborn methylation variants.
IMHO, it's worth working through his protocol and to prioritize it according to your current health, and guided by family history (like my dad's family had trouble with T2 diabetes) for a shot at your best health possible. And really personalize it. There are some recommended supplements I just can't take due to side effects. Definitely add supplements one at a time, track effects and tweak accordingly.
Let us know how it goes for you.

Great question, Junipero. FWIW, many in our community have been using a personalized multi-factorial approach BEFORE we even heard of Dr. Bredesen. As Susan indicated, it's not been a straight trajectory for many of us. For instance, once I was well on my path I learned that I was dealing with CIRS... which has taken me in a different direction but has ultimately allowed me to focus on specific areas in an effort to continue optimizing my health. I never used a Bredesen-trained practitioner, but have used a specialist for my Lyme disease issues.
Here's a talk I gave at the Buck Institute several years ago outlining my journey (and that of our community) in utilizing Dr. Bredesen's approach. P.S. This is my first public speaking gig to a standing room only audience.

Very nice job Julie. You did excellent. I've had some experience with public speaking and it's not easy. Especially with "brain fog". Nice to hear how much better you are from where you were.Julie G wrote:Great question, Junipero. Sorry to hear you now have Lyme and CIRS. But treating those two things have helped me alot. It's a long process and if you have the genetics to not be able to throw things off - makes it harder. I have the worst of genetics on that one. I'm doing better than I was. But now trying to learn about what to do for cognative dysfunction. My mom died with dememtia. Looking back we realize she had MCAS, CIRS and MARCONS. They are now thinking that MARCONS may be contributing to brain atrophy.
