Alzheimers with Type 1 diabetes

Post by Bob Chapman »

Greetings. I’m new to this forum and got this site from Dr. Bredesen’s book, which I bought and read. I’m with a doctor who deals with my Alzheimer’s thru him in Ashland, Oregon. Met her once; she’s gathering med records and will make decisions about diet and treatment. I’m a retired 76 years old lawyer with a bicycle jones. In good physical condition; I’ve had Uncle Al in town for 5 to 7 years. I’ve also had diabetes type 1 for 35 years, with no complications. The doctor I’m dealing with has never had a patient with type 1. I’d like to find some other type 1s and learn what I can from them about how to handle this disease and Alzheimer’s. I read that insulin causes plaques to form and I’m ready to do the diet when the doctor makes it. As a type 1 I can’t live without insulin and would like to hear from other type 1s how they get along.
Thanks for being here and all the good work you must be doing. I’m glad to contribute as we go along.

Welcome Bob, not a T1, but know some T1's who follow Dr. Bernstein's program to minimize insulin usage. Here are some references, if you aren't familiar.

Bernstein's book: https://www.diabetes-book.com/
His "Diabetes University" on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... vMo0Ck_lcY
A Facebook group of T1's & T1 parents who follow his teachings: https://www.facebook.com/Type1Grit/

This is a summary of his philosophy: https://www.diabetes-book.com/laws-small-numbers/

If you don't know about Bernstein, he's now age 90, was diagnosed T1 at age 12. Became an engineer, married a doctor. Got one of the first glucometers (and was able to, at the time, because his wife was a doc- I believe this was the late 1960's) and figured out how to minimize his use of insulin and keep normal blood sugars. Wrote this up, and tried to present to the docs, but they would not listen to an engineer. So at age 45, he went to medical school and became a doc. He's still practicing and has focussed on T1 & T2 diabetes subsequently.

Last I knew, he still did monthly Q&A with anybody who writes in. I listened to a few quite a few years ago. He did not have patience for those who asked questions that were answered in his book. His answer to them: read the book first!. He's still a very sharp guy.

Hi Bob

I am one of the support interns on the site and, along with Tincup, want to extend a warm welcome to our site and community.

It's fantastic that you are taking such positive action to deal with Uncle Al and have found a doctor you can work with. Many of us on here follow the Bredesen protocol so you are in good company. Being in good physical shape is already such a great start.

There is a wealth of information on this site. If you haven't had a chance to explore it yet, I have listed some links below that you might find helpful.

Primer. Written by a practicing MD (also with ApoE4), this explains the biochemistry of ApoE4 and also provides research-based prevention strategies. There is a lot of information so please don't feel overwhelmed. Take it slowly and find a section which resonates with you.

How-To Guide This will help you to navigate the site.

Our Stories. Sometimes reading the stories of others can be a source of inspiration. It would be great to hear more about your story too and how you've managed so far with Uncle Al - especially with Type 1. I'm sure there are others on the site who would welcome your insights.

One quick tip, if you are responding to someone, it is helpful to use the quote button in the upper right corner by your username. This will also trigger an email that a response to the post has been submitted.

I hope you find Tincup's links helpful and other users will chime in on your question regarding Type 1 and Alzheimer's. In the meantime, we're so glad you have joined us on this site and look forward to your contributions. Please feel free to reach out anytime if you need support or have any questions.

Sending you very best wishes.
