Ezetimibe's effect on Omega 3s

Post by sweetgum »

I am currently trying to lower my LDL and ApoB levels thru diet modification before my physical in December. If they are not within range then, I will need to consider medication. I was thinking I would either do Rosuvastatin or Ezetimibe. I was leaning towards Ezetimibe since it doesn't lower cholesterol systemically but I came across information that shows that Ezetimibe not only prevents absorption of cholesterol in the intestines but also the absorption of omega 3 fatty acids. This is concerning because I take high dose fish oil for cognitive reasons and I would not want to disrupt that. Does anyone have any thoughts or experience with this? Thank you!

I've started Ezetimibe, so interested in answers to this too!

Ezetimibe has a half-life of ~22 hours. It's pretty long. My 5 minutes of thought on this would be to take Omega-3 fatty acids in the morning with coffee (5-7 AM), take the Ezetimibe at 10 AM and have my first meal at 11 AM - 12 PM.

It would be nice to get an an Omega blood test to look at it over time 1) pre ezetimibe and 2) 3-4 weeks into taking ezetimibe.

HI, this article describes Ezetimibe's mechanism of action: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3402055/ . So ezetimibe should an inhibitor of absorption of specific types of plant sterols only.
I am an ApoE 4/4, 78 y female. I have got medicated high blood pressure, too high LDL, normal HDL and normal triglycerides. I have also had coronary heart disease for 15 years now. My body weight has remained normal. My cholesterol medication has been Ezetemibe for 14 years now, and my heart disease has remained relatively mild through these years. Of course my diet has been cardioprotective (most like FINGER) through years. I cannot use statins, because I am allergic to them. I have not noted any side effects from Ezetemibe.
If you are worried about your alpha-linolenic acid values, ask your doctor. Statins are an effective and widely accepted primary medication for hypercholesterolemia, and they do not affect lipid absorption.
I will keep on taking ezetimibe, because that abstract is not convincing enough in my situation. This drug has lowered my cholesterol values, without subjective side effects. So far I seem to have received enough omega3 for my brain, too. 👍

Thank you! I will look into the half life. What you said makes a lot of sense. I am requesting an omega test at my physical to get a baseline. Thanks!

That is exactly what I do. I take all my fat pills (Omega-3, Krill Oil, Fish Oil and Plasmalogens ) in the morning 1 to 2 hours before taking Ezetimibe.

You can also order the Omegaquant test from amazon to test for your Omega-3 level in your blood.

Interesting comments.

I've been taking it since September 2024, with no observable side effects. I haven't tested my lipids since.

I asked the pharmacist about Ezetimibe and he said to take it in the evening, as most cholesterol was produced at that time...
