New Diagnosis Dec 27, 2024

Post by HappyForHope »

My husband has a new diagnosis. He is Apoe 3/4. (MCI)

I've quickly begun, and have delved into hours upon hours upon hours of research and think I can (somewhat) speak intelligently about this destructive disease and ReCODE. I'm very familiar with functional medicine but it's nearly impossible to find one who takes insurance, therefore we have a PCP whom we see for regular visits, etc. Our PCP is not only very interested in the Bredesen protocol but is also extremely supportive. (This is important).
In the past 3 weeks since this new discovery I was able to get him appointments for, and has already had several of the protocol tests completed. The next step...a sleep study.
We live very near one of the 6 research centers but was not able to get in. I did, however, find a great doctor (3 hours away) who has practiced Dr. Bredesen's protocol many years. Today is our first visit.
We've not told a single soul yet, as I know we'll be inundated with questions and unwanted skepticism. I'm thankful to have found this forum.
I've been journaling this journey to wellness for my husband and am eager to be able to post updates of hope and encouragement along the way.
I will say this.....in the past 3 weeks, since making changes to my husband's lifestyle, I've seem INCREDIBLE improvements.
Please keep up in your prayers.

Hi Carol,
We would love to hear about any improvements and what you think is contributing to those improvements. Good job taking matters into your own hands and being proactive in looking for things you can do to improve your husband's health!

Hi Carol

How fantastic that you've seen improvements already . That must be so encouraging and has made me smile so I wanted to let you know!

Just one thing that crossed my mind; have you thought of an Oura ring to monitor sleep? I believe it is one of the most accurate sleep trackers. It gives data on the different sleep waves as well as sleep efficiency and oxygenation at night. I've had one for over five years now and love it. If it's of interest, please send me a private message and I can send you a link that gives you 10% off (I'm not benefitting in any way - it's just a referral link).

Keep us posted and good luck with your appointments.

Kind regards

I hope the testing went well. The tracker I was referring to is this: https://ouraring.com/ I find the data really useful and it helps me to make small changes to optimise my sleep. There are a few discussion threads on it - just put Oura in the search bar.

Kind regards

I have been on sleep apnea treatment for around 15-20 years now. Using a CPAP machine can be frustrating, and getting used to one is difficult for some. However, I won't sleep without my machine (okay... sometimes I nap on the couch when whatever is on TV is boring and I'm tired and I don't have the machine on). I encourage your husband to work hard to get used to the machine; it can take a couple of consistent weeks of use. If the mask he uses doesn't work well, try another one. I use a ResMed F30i, and have a couple of other types that sometimes I may need to switch to during a night when my mask seems to be fighting me.

I have slept better - as has my wife - since I started using CPAP. I have considered the Inspire surgery, but not sure I want to spend the money on something that may or may not work for me. I don't have money to simply throw away!

I thank you for the mention of the Bredesen Protocol. It is something I will research in my own efforts to stave off AD for as long as I can! I too am new at this.

Best wishes for you and your husband! You are in my prayers!

Thank you, Lindsey. Every day is not a "good" day yet but we see hope.

It only took 1 night, of the 5-night sleep test, for the doctor to verify slept apnea for my husband, and a script has been written for the machine. We are eager to receive and begin that.

I plan to post an update soon.

Take care and God Bless you

Today marks 1 month since my husband received his diagnosis. This is my FIRST PRGRESS REPORT.
To date I have;
* put him on a gluten-free, dairy-free meal plan
* increased his healthy proteins
* tripled his caloric daily intake (as he is underweight)
* he gets only good grains
* removed ALL processed foods from his diet (critical)
* include a par-steamed vegetable and protein with each meal (par-steamed helps heal the gut)
* The Dr. took him off his probiotic but I'm going to reinstute.
* Meals are strictly 3 hours apart. (also heals the gut)
* put him a 12/3 fasting program
* calculated HIS necessary water intake and adjusted accordingly
* put him on a guided movement plan....AKA exercise program
* got him tested/approved for a CPAP machine (I got this done in just 2 days)
* removed all sugar and beer from his diet
* adjusted his vitamins according to his test results and kinetic testing + Dr. recommendations.
* administered his 2nd MoCA test (this morning)

PROGRESS REPORT EVALUATION -
He still loses words but not nearly as much - Improved !
His handwriting is still scribbly - No improvement
His MoCA score went from 23 (just 14 days ago to 27 this morning. Last night is was 30 unassisted) Improved !
His sister (the only one who knows), hears an enormous improvement in his conversing. Improved !

Suggestions are welcomed.....PLEASE.
