Sunjya Schweig, MD / Berkeley, CA

Post by Julie G »

I’m working with Dr. Schweig to determine the cause of my elevated CIRS biomarkers and to specifically address a Lyme disease co-infection. Lyme and related illnesses are his specialty. He's an expert in complex chronic illnesses which require rigorous investigation and management. He specializes in helping patients with Lyme disease and related co-infections. He is board certified in integrative and holistic medicine (ABIHM) and family practice (FAAFP).  He practices in Berkeley California and launched the California Center for Functional Medicine (CCFM) with his friend and colleague, Chris Kresser.

Unfortunately, it's quite difficult to get an appt. to see him. Overall, he and his office have been a pleasure to deal with. He’s happy to work with clients via telephone or teleconference but requires an initial face-to-face visit. The first visit was 90 mins in length and cost $795, about what you’d expect from a specialist of his caliber. He ordered many tests to try to identify the drivers of my inflammation uncovering multiple areas to work on. His staff provided careful estimates for everything allowing me to economically control the process. Since that initial visit, I’ve had one hour long case review/report of findings ($485) and several 30 mins. follow-ups ($300) by phone. He continues to order specialized supplements, medications (as needed), and orders labs for me. The one minor complaint that I have is the delay in receiving some of the supplements or tests. I have to work with various support staff in the office via a patient portal. Sometimes it takes weeks (even months) to get what I need. In those cases, I could have been more proactive and often dropped the ball in reminding them about what I needed. I don't think Dr. Schweig is Bredesen-trained, but he's very supportive of his approach and fully aware that my cognition is a primary focus for me. He actually works with Dr. Bredesen on a “brain board” so I know they share a very similar philosophy. I’m honored to have Dr. Schweig on my team and would highly recommend him to anyone dealing with CIRS, especially if Lyme is a driver. He’s also excellent for ordering any Bredesen-type labs that I’m having difficulty getting through my local physician or ordering on my own.

Hi Julie, you might want to correct the Berkley/Berkeley typos so this shows up if someone searches for Berkeley. You can delete this post too if you wish. Circ

Hi Julie,

How long did it take for you to get an appointment? I was told that his waiting list is now two years long and that they are not even adding to the list! I was referred to his clinical associate at the CCFM, Dr. Asfour, for help with my Lyme. I hope he is familiar with Dr. Bredesen's approach as well. I will post a review if he is!

It was really hard and Dr. Bredesen (very kindly) pulled some major strings to get me in. My guess is that you'll be in great hands with his colleague. Finding physicians who specialize in Lyme is extraordinarily difficult... as I'm sure you know. There is one in the Chicago area, near where I live, and the wait was over a year. I just made a follow-up appt. to see Dr. Schweig in person. He's now requiring annual office visits. Very expensive, but I'll try to combine it with work...

PLEASE let us know how your visit with Dr. Asfour goes. When is it? I'm proud of you for taking this step, sister seaweed. -xo

May 14th! I'm looking forward to it. I got Dr. Schweig's name from Dr. Bredesen at his book signing in Manhattan Beach last week. He was kind enough to answer every single attendees' question(s). I had two answered and felt so fortunate.

Lucky you that you were able to get strings pulled!

Hope you like working with Dr. Asfour! I worked with him for around 8 months I would be happy to share my experience through a PM if you would like :)

Hi Julie, Sorry to here you are having to deal with CIRS and Lymes. Thanks for giving such detailed information about wait time, appt details and current costs. Always helpful because we never know when or if we will have to deal with the same or similar issues.
