New to site- looking for doctor for mom
Hi. I just got my results back from 23 and me with 1 e4. I am waiting for my mom’s results. She was diagnosed with AD several years ago. Her older sister also has it and is in a facility currently. My mom has been exhibiting forgetfulness for quite some time, but within past couple months, her status has drastically changed. She is unable to recognize my dad (her primary caregiver) and her house at times (usually Sundowners, but sometimes intermittently throughout the day). I have read Dr. Bredesen’s book and I’m desperate to find a credible doctor in our area (Chicago or suburbs). Does anybody see Dr. Sylvia Panitch? I would love any recommendations. She has an appt. with a traditional neurologist on 3/5, but I’m not too hopeful about that prognosis. I appreciate all of the effort that has been put into this site and look forward to learning a lot. Thanks and God bless!

Cmscheele,
Have you looked into the Center for Brain Health at Northshore? I don't know much about it, and I don't think its using the Bredesen protocol, but there may be some overlap in approach and wanted to share just in case.

There's also the Walsh Research Institute, which works with AD. They have a directory of doctors trained by them:

Re: New to site- looking for doctor for mom
Cmscheele welcome to the forum. I'm sorry to hear your mom has declined drastically in recent months. I know this must be especially hard on your dad, but also on you.
I have heard positive recommendations for Dr. Panitch. There is the link on the Wiki page that lists all the ApoE4 aware providers -- https://www.apoe4.info/wiki/ApoE4-Aware ... ctitioners. This doesn't mean they are Bredesen trained, but it might be a place to start.
You didn't mention what your mom is currently doing to address her symptoms, so I wanted to also share the list of ApoE4 aware health coaches -- [url]https://wiki.apoe4.info/wiki/ApoE4-Awar ... oaches/url]. They could potentially work with you to implement many of the necessary lifestyle changes (diet, sleep, stress management, identifying/reducing environmental toxic load, exercise, etc) while you seek to find a provider for your mom. Dr. Terry Wahls, speaks about the impact these lifestyle changes can make in this article -- [url]https://terrywahls.com/reversal-of-cogn ... ients//url].
Best of luck to you as you journey down this path with your mom. Don't forget to take care of yourself along the way!

Hi cms;
There are other ways of finding credible doctors in your area for your mom, including Bredesen trained docs. Here's a link to a wiki chapter that suggests other ways to go about it. Please know that the doctors in the ApoE4 Aware Healthcare Practitioners wiki mentioned earlier are either self-selected or copied from our Practitioners Review forum. The Practitioner Review forum entries are recommendations from our members.
In the meantime, there are things that you can do to help your mom. A good start is the Primer, written by one of our MD members.
It's a lot to learn and digest! Go slowly!

I am sorry to hear that your mom's cognitive functions are declining! I am glad to hear you are looking for the ReCode/ Dr Bredesen trained clinician.
Unfortunately, I have not heard about "Center for Brain Health at Northshore", but I would like to add that another place to look for a physician is Institute of Functional Medicine. Here is a shortcut to a physician search:

If you would like some tips on how to get the most out of our forum, please take a look at this Wiki page:

Please let us know if you have any more questions and if you were able to find a right doctor for your mom.
Be well!

Wow! Many thanks to everyone. It is a lot to digest, especially while just trying to cope emotionally. I did get Dr. Panitch’s name from the list on the site, but I overlooked the Practioner Review Forum. So, thanks for that help, as well. Will check it out ASAP. I also set up and appt. with Dr. Kozlowski, whose name I got from the Functional Medicine website, but still unsure. Also appreciate suggestion to seek out functional medicine coach in meantime. Will also look into that immediately. Again, I appreciate all of your assistance. Keep up the good work. You are a lifeline for us newbies!
Re: New to site- looking for doctor for mom
Greetings, CMScheele! I've been seeing Dr. Panitch for over a year now and my feelings are mixed. She's very pleasant and friendly and our visits are enjoyable. Her practice is closer to where I live than the other ReCODE physicians in the Chicago area. She's completely on board with the Bredesen Protocol and takes a generally holistic approach to medicine that some folks on this require.
On the minus side: I don't get the sense that she's done many ReCODE protocols apart from mine. She orders lots of tests, but does not seem to put the time and effort into analyzing them and developing a game plan before our visits. (Soon after ordering a massive blood test for me at an off-site facility, she ordered an in-office CBC to the tune of $450!) She prescribes lots of expensive supplements that are only available through her office.
In sum, I'd recommend visiting her but only if you take pro-active ownership of your mother's care.
Best of luck to you and your mother!

Re: New to site- looking for doctor for mom
Thanks, Avalon. I somehow didn’t see this notification until now. I greatly appreciate your feedback. My mom had her initial visit and is having some of the tests done now, prior to her next scheduled appointment. My parents are prepared for the cost of supplements, but plan to shop around, to see if there are cheaper ones. Have you tried doing so? Thanks again!

To let someone know that you are responding to them, you can use the quote button in the upper right. In this case, I quoted Cmscheele, and then built a quote for Avalon so there should be two email notices. The magnifying glass at the very top (Only when looking at a list of posts, not when in a post) is good for searching the forums for answers to questions.Avalon wrote:.
