Introduction - would like to meet scientists/biotech folks involved in ApoE research

Hi,

I recently sequenced my genome and discovered I'm homozygous for the ApoE4 polymorphism (E4/E4). I also have other mutations, besides ApoE4, that further increase my chances of developing Alzheimer's.

I'm 44 yrs. old and a molecular biologist by training. I have a PhD and currently lead the research for a biotech company developing a treatment for brain cancer.

I'd like to use my free time to work on drugs and therapeutics to mitigate the effects of ApoE4. Eventually, I'd like to start a company.

I am new to the ApoE and Alzheimer's field. I am trying to learn quickly but still have a long way to go. I would really like to meet other scientists and folks involved in biotech who are working on ApoE therapeutics.

In addition to this forum, there are several other areas of the website that you can visit to learn more about Alzheimer's and the ApoE4 gene. Welcome petri.d from another ApoE 4/4 who is old enough to be your mother and likes to think that I'm one of many people I know whose 4/4 brains are still working just fine--in positions as varied as judge, law school professor, competitive bridge player and treasurer of a large metro area non-profit. I went back for a second Master's in a translational science-y field when I was 57 and enjoyed it throughly, serve on federal grant review panels as a Consumer Reviewer and enjoy watching sessions from the CTAD (Clinical Trials on Alzheimer's disease) conference and AAIC (Alz. Assn International Conference) to stretch my comprehension. And my mid-life health was not as good as it is now by many measures.

With your PhD and current position you have a singular benefit, since both are strongly linked to cognitive resilience even in the presence of AD biomarkers. Here are some suggestions for ways to connect with other researchers and monitor what's happening in the field--which is extraordinarily diverse!

• ALZFORUM provides a weekly newsletter of topics and their importance, webinars, resources and comments from noted researchers on new findings

• Alzheimer's Association: Professional Researchers has a listing of multiple sites that may be of interest.

• International Society to Advance Alzheimer's Research and Treatment (ISTAART) provides events that seem to be oriented to early-career AD researchers and also offer networking.

• Google Scholar will provide a steady stream of new articles on ApoE 4 if you click on the 3 horizontal lines in the upper left corner and set that as an Alert.

• You may be able to have your employer support virtual or hybrid conference attendance at any one of many conferences on ApoE4 and AD, especially given that people with ApoE 4 are not immune to the risk of brain cancer.
